The name of the show “Hysterical Society”… what we conservators and antiquarians call the Historical Societies. It has a couple of meanings. The first being that a Historical Society is a place whose primary goal is that of historic preservation -Keeping a record or artifact of the past, of how things were, or the state/quality of living specifically of the 19th century or turn of the 20th Century. With that in mind, I have also been thinking about the term “Hysterical” what it means, its origins, the psycological label for women that it became during the turn of the century.
It is best to think of these pieces for the installation as part artifact and part preservation and part female mystique. They are weird and funny and elegant and they are just a little off, unbalanced while trying to remain composed and pulled together. Wylie Sofia Garcia
